April's Question of the Month:
Which two authors on OCAI have a new biography series coming out called, I AM OKLAHOMA? And who are they featuring in their biographies? Send us your answers by April 30th and if we choose your answer, you win a FREE autographed book by either of these two authors! (Sorry, we can't send you their biographies YET as they will not be available until July!) Our address is at the bottom of the home page.

April is Poetry Month
To help celebrate the poet in all of us, OCAI is sponsoring a poetry contest for studnets from Kindergarten-12th grade.This is our first time to do a poetry contest and we're very excited.Authors of the top three poems will receive a FREE autographed book of their choice from one of our many authors featured on our site.
Poetry Contest Rules:
Theme:Spring--think about spring. What do you like best about it? How does it make you feel? Be sure to use the five senses as you write (What do you see, hear, taste, touch, and smell?). Also, for students in 4th grade and up, be sure to use similies and metaphors as that will help your poems "spring" to life!
1. Poem must be original and no longer than one page, typed double-space.
2. For kindergarteners through third graders, poems can be printed clearly, not typed.
3. A winner will be chosen for: K-3rd grades, 4th-7th grades, and 8th-12th grades.
4. Please mail a hard copy of your poem to:

5. Only one poem per student, please.
6. Voting will be done by a panel of judges. Winning poems will be picked for creativity, use of metaphors and similies, humor, and use of the five senses.
7. Deadline: April 28th. Winners will be announced on OCAI site on April 30th, and winning poems will be featured on our site, along with a photo of each winner (if approved by parent and/or teacher).

Darleen Bailey Beard and Gwendolyn Hooks have great news--teachers and librarians have asked for it, now they've got it, and it's coming out this July 2015--a new biography series for third-graders about famous Oklahomans and Oklahomans making a difference! The series, published by the Oklahoma Heritage Association, will begin with a set of five books featuring the following Oklahomans: Will Rogers (written by Darleen Bailey Beard), Leona Mitchell (written by Gwendolyn Hooks), Te Ata (written by Pati Hailey), Bill Wallace (written by Jane McKellips), and Dr. Jordon Tang (written by Cheryl Schuermann), All authors live in Oklahoma.The books will have photos, a glossary, time line, places to visit, fun facts, and more.
And guess what? The best part of this series is: elementary schools throughout the state of Oklahoma will receive a FREE set of the first five books!
How amazing is this?? Everyone is very excited and the five authors of this series hope to do a panel at Encyclo-Media, this fall, describing their books and research. The panel will be called: I AM OKLAHOMA. The books will be available for purchase through several sources and can be purchased at Encyclo-Media, as well.
Stacy Nyikos--her new picture book, Waggers, inspired by her dog, is now out and available for purchase. Way to go, Stacy!
Tammi Sauer--her picture book, Nugget & Fang, has been featured in the Scholastic book fairs and the Scholastic team went to her house to video her so they can feature her as an author on the DVD they send out to schools with their bookfairs....way to go,Tammi! We'll post this video asap.
Anna Myers---her first picture book is out and called, Tumbleweed Baby! After writing 20 middle grade and young adult novels--that's right, we said TWENTY!--Anna has tried her hand at writing picture books. Her book is getting rave reviews. Click here to learn more about Anna and her fun-filled author visits which now appeal to students of ALL ages! More good news for Anna--Tumbleweed Baby has been nominated for the Crystal Kite Award given by the Society of Children's Book Writer's & Illustrators. Voting is taking place right now, along with two other Oklahoma authors/illustrataors. Good luck, Anna!
A new survey by children's book publisher Scholasticshows major increases in e-book reading among youths, though fully half have yet to try it. And lovers of paperbacks will be glad to hear that print books are still putting up a fight, even among younger children.

Every other month we feature a new author or illustrator in a video with an exclusive interview so you'll get to meet our OCAI authors & illustrators up-close and personal. Each video and interview is archived for easy reference on the author's/illustrator's biography page. We also provide links to contact information, "fun facts", brochures, lesson plans, & much more.
Need a grant? Check out the grant we provide on our grant page as well as both local and national grants. Be sure to send us grants that you know about because if we post a grant you suggest, we'll send you a free autographed book. We also have a "Bimonthly Question" which gives you more chances to win free books. "Games" is a fun page for kids to learn more about reading, writing, Oklahoma authors and illustrators through fun games.
"Put Yourself on this Site" is a great way for you, your organization, or company to be represented here at Oklahoma Children's Authors and Illustrators. You must meet the simple requirement of being a published author with a mainstream publisher--not a vanity press or a self-publisher AND/OR have several years of experience in visiting schools throughout the U.S. as a speaker and author with books that are recommended by teachers.Simply follow the easy directions on this page.
